Yatra 2019, Day 5, Puri

Morning Class by HG Madhavananada Prabhu SB 4.9.11

Translation
Dhruva Mahārāja continued: O unlimited Lord, kindly bless me so that I may associate with great devotees who engage in Your transcendental loving service constantly, as the waves of a river constantly flow. Such transcendental devotees are completely situated in an uncontaminated state of life. By the process of devotional service I shall surely be able to cross the nescient ocean of material existence, which is filled with the waves of blazing, firelike dangers. It will be very easy for me, for I am becoming mad to hear about Your transcendental qualities and pastimes, which are eternally existent.

Purport
The significant point in Dhruva Mahārāja’s statement is that he wanted the association of pure devotees. Transcendental devotional service cannot be complete and cannot be relishable without the association of devotees. We have therefore established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Anyone who is trying to be aloof from this Krishna Consciousness Society and yet engage in Kṛṣṇa consciousness is living in a great hallucination, for this is not possible. From this statement by Dhruva Mahārāja it is clear that unless one is associated with devotees, his devotional service does not mature; it does not become distinct from material activities. The Lord says, satāṁ prasaṅgān mama vīrya-saṁvido bhavanti hṛt-karṇa-rasāyanāḥ (Bhāg. 3.25.25): only in the association of pure devotees can the words of Lord Kṛṣṇa be fully potent and relishable to the heart and ear. Dhruva Mahārāja explicitly wanted the association of devotees. That association in devotional activities is just like the waves of an incessantly flowing river. In our Krishna Consciousness Society we have full engagement twenty-four hours a day. Every moment of our time is always busily engaged in the service of the Lord. This is called the incessant flow of devotional service.

A Māyāvādī philosopher may question us, “You may be very happy in the association of devotees, but what is your plan for crossing the ocean of material existence?” Dhruva Mahārāja’s answer is that it is not very difficult. He clearly says that this ocean can be crossed very easily if one simply becomes mad to hear the glories of the Lord. Bhavad-guṇa-kathā: for anyone who persistently engages in hearing the topics of the Lord from Śrīmad Bhagavad-gītā, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and Caitanya-caritāmṛta and who is actually addicted to this process, just as one becomes addicted to intoxicants, it is very easy to cross the nescience of material existence. The ocean of material nescience is compared to a blazing fire, but to a devotee this blazing fire is insignificant because he is completely absorbed in devotional service. Although the material world is blazing fire, to a devotee it appears full of pleasure (viśvaṁ pūrṇa-sukhāyate).

The purport of this statement by Dhruva Mahārāja is that devotional service in the association of devotees is the cause of the development of further devotional service. By devotional service only is one elevated to the transcendental planet Goloka Vṛndāvana, and there also there is only devotional service, for the activities of devotional service both in this world and in the spiritual world are one and the same. Devotional service does not change. The example of a mango can be given here. If one gets an unripe mango, it is still a mango, and when it is ripe it remains the same mango, but it has become more tasteful and relishable. Similarly, there is devotional service performed according to the direction of the spiritual master and the injunctions and regulative principles of śāstra, and there is devotional service in the spiritual world, rendered directly in association with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. But they are both the same. There is no change. The difference is that one stage is unripe and the other is ripe and more relishable. It is possible to mature in devotional service only in the association of devotees.

There are some smarta Brahamanas who chant HK Mantra, read SB but what is the difference? What do we mean by saying demons are practising bhakti, that they are making a show. SP says in the NOD, unless someone is initated by a proper SM, then it's not good. What is the difference between chanting with and without initiation. Without initiation you can get mukti, bhakti etc, but not bhakti. Only by proper initiation can you get bhakti. Demons want to cut that out and don't want to take initation, they want to read on their own and try do to it just by themselves, but in this verse it is said by SP that association of devotees is the most important.

Hence Dhruva Maharaj is praying for constant association of persons performing devotional service. Visvanath Cakravarti Thakur says - Dhruva maharaj is doing this the material nature  - He is raising his hands in the air and with great pride, no problem I'm going to overcome this material life which is full of pains and tribulations by the strenght of the association of devotees. Nothing is going to be impossible for me with the association of devotees. Nothing can touch this drunk in the association of devotees. By bhakti produced in the association of devotees By some bhakti unmukunti sukriti you get the association, when you are in association of devotees and are reading together, chanting together, serving together one directly meets the lord.

When you meet the lord, what are you going to do? I'll have my Gurudeva in front of me and then I'll go, with association of devotees. Then what are we going to ask Krsna, give me more association with devotees. This is what happens - we see Krsna and then we want more association. Association of devotees gives us Bhakti and this verse shows the mood of the devotees, conviction of Dhruva Maharaj. Bhakti done in the association of the devotees.

11.3.30 - How to associaite with devotees? Hear Krsna Kataha should be some exchange some reflection back and forth. In such association we become satisfied and all nasty thoughts go away. Devotees should not be envious and should have the trust to share. Sanga of devotees has to have trust. It has to be a closed sanga of devotees. We can't have same degree of confidentiality with all kinds of devotees, we can only have close association with intimate devotees. Depends on who we are speaking with.

Confidentiality has to be there. In that situation we can be honest and in association of devotees we can overcome the issue we have when we share with devotess.

Just like we love Krsna, we should love the devotees. If we want to protect your bhakti, you don't want to fall down then devotional service can't be complete without the association of devotees. How do we protect ourselves? By loving devotees and being in the association in devotees - coming together and hearing Krsna Katha, that is the love.

When you are asked to speak, you MUST speak and you repeat what your have heard from your Gurudeva and remember it's not yours. Krsna Katha is the deity and the speaker is the pujari. If a Sadhu is not speaking Krsna Katha, what are we getting?

Whereever and whenever anyone reads the SB, Krsna is always present. Krsna loves the SB that He's always there and Krsna doesn't come alone, How much should we ready? 1 verse/half verse and Krsna brings the gopis along with Him. These activities are so purifying but when we come in association of devotees and hear and chant then the magic starts happening in a mood without any envy then Krsna is very very pleased.

=================
Haridas Thakur Samadhi
We sang Gauranga Karuna Koro. Sometimes we feel a festival should never end, but actually everything should have a beginning and end because otherwise it won't be a festival at all. If there is no beginning and end then a festival will become old. The people who understand that when you walk 7 steps with someone and you exchange 7 words with someone you become their friend. With saintly person every word and every step establishes a friendship. No one wants to see a friendship to end or a festival to end but everything needs to be a beginning and end and hence there has to be 2 embankments through which the river of love flows. One embankment of coming together and one of going away - Vibralamba utsav. Gurudeva is going to leave this world before us and then the devotees will have to cooperate. When our Gurudeva leaves we feel it's a mistake on Krsna's part but it's not a mistake jst like a festival there has to be union and separation. Don't think Gurudeva has gone, but he's hiding in the bushes watching what are you going to do? Gurudeva is always with us. Physical association is very very important but physical association is useless if we don't imbibe his mood.

SP wrote to the devotees, please be happy in separation, even if we are seperated we are always with our Gurudeva. The ecstacy of separation with our Gurudeva is more than the ecstacy of union. There is union and there is separation.

In Sajjana Toshani, there are 2 types of disciples - antarmukh and bahiranga (Vishahi - Who is crying I'm not doing well, snehasalita - disciples who feel Gurudeva is not seeing me, they want Gurudeva to pay attention to me, when we think I'm this body we start feeling like this and Gurugiri (business)) disciples - All these disciples want Gurudeva to focus on me. But Gurudeva is not meant to be enjoyed, after the disapperance of Gurudeva they think now Gurudeva is not there so now I should become Gurudeva.

Gurudeva is never dead, he's present in the Holy Name, by chanting the Holy Name we get bhakti to Gurudeva. If we are a mundance person we don't see it. Hence, we have an obligation to our Gurudeva to give us this , Krsna Katha. How to repay that debt, SB it's said - such a person who knows I can repay the debt is such a fool, the only way to repay the debt to Gurudeva is to take the same thing what we have got and give it back. The realizations we get from Harikatha or Kirtan is to repeat them and that is by repay Gurudeva's debt.

Best service to Gurudeva is to listen, desire to hear is the best service we can give to Gurudeva so listen to your Hare Krishna very attentively because Gurudeva is present in it.

========
Class by Rajendra prabhu:
What is better hearing or repeating what I hear. The qualities is what we can judge a devotee and how they lead by their example.
When Gurudeva has gone then we understand the mood of Vipralambha. Even BVT we haven't got his Vapu but only by hearing and then take those teaching and applying those teaching in our lives and that's how real relationships happen.

One time there was a snake charmer, before Mahaprabhu had appered and he was in the mood of ananta sesa and within him, a thousand mouths and a thousand ears would not be sufficient to hear the glories of Haridas Thakur. He was always chanting the HK mantra. He had no apothy of chanting the HK name.

One who has implicit faith in Guru and Krsna then everything comes to him. Haridas Thakur was loved by everyone unless someone was envious of him.

Haridas prabhu was caned in 22 market places and he still smiled and didn't feel a thing because he was in KC, just like Prahlad Maharaj who went through lot of things and still didn't feel a thing because he was in KC.

Haridas Thakur was always just Chanting very loudly. Haridas Thakur when Mahaprabhu showed his divinity He revealed that he took the beating instead of Haridas Thakur taking the beating.

Just share this gift with others, this is the best gift which will please Guru and Gauranga.

Teachings by Haridas Thakur
Haridas Thakur calls ignorance the mist and clouds of covering the sun of the Holy Name. Our Anarthas are the coverings. 3 types
1. Ignorance of Holy Name
2. Ignorance of Krsna.
3. Ignorance of your own self

Non-permant thirst Asat Trishna. An intelligent person doesn't thirst for non permanent things. Weakness of heart - attachment for trifiling things. We start hankering for something which is not permanent. Haridas Thakur talks about Nama Bhasa, just when the sun is coming up, we get the benefit of seeing the rays. We may start feeling the effect of the rays, Nama Bhasa is the dim rays of the Holy Name. Nama Bhasa leads to pure bhakti. More powerful than the vedas. All sinful activities are destroyed, all effects of Kali Yuga are gone.

Different types of Nama Bhasa-
Sanketa - Low Nama Bhasa 6th canto of SB, in direct chanting thinking of some other object while of some other sound. example of Ajamila
Parihasa = chanting in a joking mood ; Jarasandha
Stobha =  Sisupala is the example; When Sisupala was born his first words were blasphemy of Krsna. He was fully absorbed in
Haela - Chanting with disregard or in attention.

These are called lower end of Nama Bhasa

Higher Nama Bhasa - chanting will full faith in Krsna even though we are having anarthas. This will lead to suddha bhasa.
If we still have the unlimited elements but have faith to continue to keep chanting the Holy Name then we will come to point of Higher Nama Bhasa that we will clear the mist and ignorance and we will come to Shudda Naama which leads to Prema.

The Holy Name is our only savior and the process in this Kali Yuga is to chant the Holy Name without any offences and keep working to try not to have offences. Material world is not our home and hence we should have regular chanting of HK mantra and constant rememberance that we have nothing to do with the material world then chanting will take effect.

Chanting with faith even though we have anarthas, but chanting with faith and having association of devotees and surrender and surround yourself when chanting the Holy Name then we will be elevated to Shuddha naam. This is the potency of the Holy Name.

It's like a tree which will give fruit in right time. If we sneak into the mangal aarti of the Vedas, they are all offering their dandavats to the lotus feet of Krsna.

Bhaktivinod Thakur has written this song “Radha Krishna Bol”. This song is taken from the book Gitavali (Section: Nagara Kirtana Song 4). Bhaktivinoda Thakur says that Maha prabhu and Nitya nanda have gives us the Hare Krishna mantra. But we are engrossed in material activities so we don't realize the value of this mantra. We are His servant so we should incessantly keep on chanting Sri Radhey and Shri Shri Krishna.

(1)
‘radha-krishna’ bol bol bolo re sobai
(ei) sikha diya, sab nadiya
phirche nece’ gaura-nitai

(2)
(miche) mayar bose, jaccho bhese’,
khaccho habudubu, bhai

(3)
(jiv) krishna-das, e biswas,
korle to’ ar duhkho nai

(4)
(krishna) bolbe jabe, pulak ha’be
jhorbe ankhi, boli tai

(5)
(‘radha) krishna’ bolo, sange calo,
ei-matra bhikha ca

(6)
(jay) sakal’bipod bhaktivinod
bole, jakhon o-nam gai

1) Chant, chant "Radha-Krishna!" Everyone chant! When Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda came dancing through Nadia, They gave these teachings: Chant, chant "Radha-Krishna!" Everyone chant!

2) You are caught up in a whirlpool of senseless action and are sinking lower and lower. Chant, chant "Radha-Krishna!" Everyone chant!

3) If you just understand that the spirit soul is the eternal servant of Krishna, you will never have any more sorrows.

4) Chant Hare Krishna and your eyes will fill with tears and your body will feel transcendental shivering. Chant, chant "Radha-Krishna!" Everyone chant!

5) Simply chant "Radha-Krishna" and join with us. Those are the only alms we beg. Chant, chant "Radha- Krishna!" Everyone chant!

6) "All dangers will be gone when that Name is chanted," says Bhaktivinoda Thakura. Chant, chant "Radha-Krishna!" Everyone chant!
