Yatra 2018 - Day 13 - Santipura

Today was our last day of our Yatra. Thank you to everyone who joined us on this online journey.

We visited the Holy place of Santipura. It was here that Sri Advaita Prabhu on behalf of all Jiva souls, prayed loudly to Shalagram Sila with Ganga jal and Tulsi. It is said when he prayed, it sounded like a loud roar. He showed by his personal example that it doesn't matter where we are, even in a small remote place if we pray sincerely to Krsna He will respond to his devotee's call.

Katha from today:

In his prayers unto the Spiritual masters, Sri Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami has mentioned that Sri Advaita Acharya is the Lord’s partial incarnation (advaita acharya prabhura amsa-avatara.. – Caitanya Caritamrta, Adi 1.39). In Sri Gaura Gannodesha dipika, Kavi Karnapur has further clarified that Sada shiva, who had previously appeared as an avesa incarnation (one empowered by the Lord) ,has now descended as Sri Advaita Acharya. Sri Advaita was thus the combined incarnation of the potencies of Sada shiva and Lord Mahavishnu. Kavi Karnapura further writes that Kuvera pandita, the father of Advaita Acharya was an incarnation of the demigod Kuvera, the friend of Lord Shiva. The Supreme Lord’s Yogamaya potency appeared in Lord Caitanya’s pastimes as Sita Thakurani, the wife of Advaita Acharya. His second wife, Sri devi, was also an expansion of Yogamaya devi.Sri Acyutananda, the elder son of Advaita Gosai, was the combined form of the potencies of Kartikkeya and Achyuta Gopi. Sri Advaita Acharya was one of the primary trunks of Lord Caitanya’s desire tree of devotional service, from whom originated innumerable smaller branches and sub-branches of devotees. ‘The Gaudiya Treasures of Bengal’ considers itself exceedingly fortunate to have been able to visit and pray at Sri Advaita Acharya’s sripat at Santipur, wherein such great personalities have exhibited their exalted heart melting pastimes.Sri Advaita Acharya was about 50 years elder to Caitanya Mahaprabhu ,and was born in a Varendra Brahmana family in the year 1434 AD. Some say that He was born in the village of Lauda, in Srihatta (present Bangladesh) while some claim that He was actually born in Santipur itself. His former name was Kamalakanta and His two wives Sita devi and Sri devi, were the incarnations of Yogamaya. Sri devi gave birth to one son named Syama Dasa, while Srimati Sita Thakurani was the mother of Acyutananda ,Krsnadasa, Gopala, Balarama, Svarupa, and Jagadisa Misra. Sri Advaita was initiated by the great Madhavendra Puri when he had once come to Santipur.Sri Madhavendra passed through Santipur while he was travelling to Orissa, in order to collect the required sandalwood and camphor for his beloved Gopala.’The Gaudiya treasures of Bengal’ has covered the journey of Madhavendra Puri and the pastimes of Gopala in detail in a different article entitled  – ‘Sri Khirachora Gopinatha Temple, Balasore’. Sri Advaita Acharya had two houses – one at Santipur and the other at Navadvipa. Seeing the people of the world completely immersed in material activities and suffer greatly the pangs of material miseries, Advaita Acharya became pained at heart.Overwhelmed with compassion, He began teaching Bhagavad gita and Srimad Bhagavatam, by explaining their purports in accordance to the science of devotional service, and decrying the paths of philosophical speculation and fruitive activities. Srila Haridasa Thakura (refer- ‘Sri Haridasa Thakura’s Bhajana Kutira, Phulia’), Srivasa Pandita (refer – ‘Srivasa Angan ,Mayapur ,Navadvipa – Part 1: where Lord Gaurahari eternally performs His ecstatic pastimes’) and several other elderly vaishnavas, regularly congregated at Advaita Prabhu’s house and together discussed the glories of the Supreme Lord. Visvarupa, an expansion of Lord Balaram and the elder brother of Lord Caitanya, was also among those who graced His audience.gita bhagavata kahe acharya gosai

(Caitanya Caritamrta, Adi , 13.64)

Sri Advaita causes the descent of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu :
Sri Advaita Acharya is also known as Gaura-ana Thakura, or who has caused the Supreme Lord Gaurahari to descend in this world. Seeing the degraded consciousness of people, Advaita Thakura began to ponder on how they could be delivered from the clutches of Maya. He concluded that only Lord Krishna Himself can liberate these souls from their suffering. Srila Prabhupada mentions in his purport that just as a condemned person is relieved by the special favor of the chief executive head, similarly, the condemned people in this age of kali can only be delivered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead or one who is empowered by Him. Sri Advaita Prabhu thought that His name ‘Advaita’ would befit Him, only if He could cause the Lord to descend and inaugurate the sankirtana movement. He knew very well that lord Krishna becomes indebted to a devotee and sells Himself to one who merely offers Him tulasi leaf and a palmful of water. Considering thus, Sri Advaita Prabhu began worshipping the Supreme Lord with tulasi leaves and Ganges water, calling for Him to descend, in His loud voice. The place where Sri Advaita Acharya used to worship His saligrama sila with Tulasi and Ganges water, is presently known as ‘Babla’ (Advaita Thakura’s sripat at Santipur) and is situated not very far from the Santipur railway station. Being pleased with His prayers, the Supreme Lord, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, descended upon this world, along with His personal associates (refer – ‘YogPeeth, Mayapur, Navadvipa – The birthplace of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’). In Caitanya Bhagavata , the Lord reveals to His associates that it was Advaita Acharya, who had called upon Him and caused Him to descend from vaikuntha (‘mohare anila nada vaikuntha thakiya…’).Srila Krishnadasa Kaviraja mentions in Caitanya Caritamrta, that the merciful Lord Gaurahari had spread the sankirtana movement through Advaita Acharya and had delivered the world through Him.yanra dvara kaila prabhu kirtana prachara
yanra dvara kaila prabhu jagata nishtara
(Caitanya Caritamrta, Adi – 6.35)When Mahaprabhu was born, Sri Advaita Acharya ,in a very pleasing mood, began singing and dancing at His house here at Santipur. Everyone saw Him and Haridasa Thakura ,dance together in ecstasy, but were not able to comprehend the confidential reasons behind their actions. Taking advantage of the lunar eclipse ,occurring at that time, Sri Advaita bathed in the Ganges and mentally offered various charity unto the brahmanas.santipur gtbThe very next day after the Lord had appeared, Srimati Sita devi, the wife of Advaita Acharya, arrived at the house of Jagannatha Mishra in Mayapur and blessed the new born child with many gifts and auspicious articles like fresh grass, paddy, turmeric, sandalwood, etc. She blessed the baby to have a long duration of life.In order to protect Him against ghosts and witches, she named the little child ‘Nimai’.It is said that the inauspicious ghosts and witches do not go near a Neem Tree and hence it was quite common in earlier days to plant a Neem tree in one’s house.Besides the Neem tree is also very famous for its antiseptic qualities. As the Lord was born beneath a Neem tree and as Neem drove away all ghosts and witches, Srimati Sita Thakurani named the little child as Nimai, a name by which the Lord came to be widely known later on.

Lord Caitanya punishes Advaita Acharya :
Advaita Acharya considered Lord Caitanya to be His master and Himself to be His humble servant. However, Sri Advaita Acharya was initiated by Srila Madhavendra puri, the spiritual master of Isvara Puri. Hence, Lord Caitanya, who had been initiated by Sri Isvara Puri, considered Advaita Thakura to be His elder and superior, as He happened to be the god brother of His spiritual master. Advaita prabhu was pained at heart to see Mahaprabhu treat him with such respect and so, seeking out the merciful punishment of the lord ,He once began teaching the path of philosophical speculation and dry knowledge to a few unfortunate individuals. He knew that His actions would enrage Mahaprabhu. When the Lord caught wind of this, He became extremely angry and immediately travelled to Santipur to give him a good thrashing.Seeing the Lord’s face that day, aroused fear within everyone’s heart.Arriving at Advaita’s house, the lord asked Him as to which was superior – Jnana (speculative knowledge) or bhakti (devotional service) ? The Acharya replied, that the path of speculative knowledge (Jnana) was superior. He further added that devotional service (bhakti) was of no use if a person was devoid of knowledge. As soon as the Lord heard this, He became mad with rage. Dragging Advaita Thakura, out of His house, He threw Him into the courtyard and began beating Him very heavily.Advaita’s wife Sita Devi, knew the confidential reasons behind her husband’s actions, but still could not restrain herself and cried out “Stop ! Stop !”. She requested the Lord to pardon her husband and stop beating Him. She was afraid that He would die getting beaten.Lord Nityananda smiled hearing this and Haridasa Thakura kept fearfully chanting “Krishna ! Krishna!”.The Lord roared like thunder and said that He was resting peacefully upon the milk ocean. It was Advaita Thakura who had caused Him to descend in order to attend to His work. The Lord continued that it was Advaita Acharya who had engineered the propagation of devotional service. Now, it was He who was trying to obscure the sacred science of devotion by preaching the path of impersonalism. The Lord exclaimed that Advaita Thakura had deceived Him in all respects.Hearing the words of the Lord and receiving His chastisement, Sri Advaita Acharya became very happy.Clapping His hands, and dancing with joy, Sri Advaita remarked that the Lord had rightly punished Him. As a result He could now feel a renewed strength in His relationship with the Lord as His menial servant.Sri Advaita then joked that the Lord’s flattering words or the polite demeanor by which He used to previously glorify Advaita Thakura, had finally vanished while chastising Him.Kotha gela ebe mor-e tomara shei stuti
Kotha gela ebe tora se saba dhangati ?
(Caitanya Bhagavata)Actually Sri Advaita Thakura performed this whole drama, only to evoke the Lord’s transcendental anger and receive His chastisement. He wanted the Lord to treat Him as His servant.Through this pastime,Sri Advaita teaches us how auspicious it is to receive punishment from the Lord, or from one’s Guru.Lord Visvambhara then felt ashamed having chastised the Acharya so severely. Being very pleased, Lord Caitanya granted Him the benediction that if anyone took shelter of Advaita’s lotus feet, even if it was a worm or an insect, or even if the person had committed millions of offenses unto Caitanya Mahaprabhu, yet the Lord would readily grant that person His blessings.santipur gtb

Lord Caitanya arrives at Santipur after accepting His Sannyasa :
The Lord accepted His sannyasa order from Sri Keshava Bharati at the age of 24. Accepting His sannyasa, the Lord , out of an intense love for Krishna, started for Vrindavana. However in a state of trance, He wandered continuously for three days on the tract of land known as Radha desha (the western side of Ganges). The real purpose of accepting the sannyasa initiation is to engage oneself completely in the service of Mukunda (Lord Krishna). Likewise, Mahaprabhu decided to travel to Vrindavana and dedicate Himself solely unto the service of Mukunda, living in a solitary place. As Mahaprabhu was en route to Vrindavana, all the eight ecstatic symptoms, became simultaneously manifested in His body. As the Lord thus travelled, Nityananda Prabhu, Chandrasekhara Acharya and Mukunda followed Him.The local cowherd boys who saw Mahaprabhu singing and dancing in ecstasy, joined Him in chanting “Hari ! Hari !”. Sri Nityananda Prabhu called these boys and secretly instructed them that if the Lord asked them the way to Vrindavana, they should show Him, the path to the bank of the Ganges instead. When the cowherd boys were questioned by Mahaprabhu about the path to Vrindavana, they showed Him the path towards the Ganges, and Mahaprabhu went that way dancing in ecstasy. Meanwhile, lord Nityananda requested Chandrasekhara Acharya to inform Advaita prabhu, that the Lord was coming towards the bank of Ganges at Santipur and that He should wait there with His boat. Thus being tricked by Nityananda Prabhu, the Lord travelled towards Santipur, instead of Vrindavana. On being asked, how far Vrindavana was, Nityananda prabhu pointed towards the Ganges and remarked that they have already reached the banks of Yamuna. Mahaprabhu was very happy to hear this and immediately offered His prayers unto yamuna. Thereafter mistaking the Ganges to be Yamuna, Mahaprabhu entered its waters and took bath. By this time , Advaita Acharya also arrived there with His boat. Seeing the Acharya, the Lord was taken by surprise and asked Him how He was there in Vrindavana. Advaita Acharya then disclosed the whole situation to Him and exclaimed that by the mercy Lord Caitanya’s arrival, the place had indeed been transformed into Vrindavana (..tumi yahan, sei vrindavana..). Lord Advaita further consoled the Lord by telling Him that He had indeed bathed in Yamuna. The two rivers Ganga & Yamuna meet at Allahabad (triveni), and thereafter they combine and flow down through Bengal. Yamuna flows on the western side and the Ganges on the eastern side of the combined river. Hence the Ganges ,here at Santipur was actually a combination of the two rivers flowing down from Allahabad. Hence the Lord who was on its western side, had indeed taken His bath in yamuna. This was Advaita Thakura’s logic.Thereafter on the invitation of Advaita Acharya, the Lord along with His associates, became His guests at His residence in Santipur and passed a few days blissfully together.
The Lord at Advaita Acharya’s residence :
Though the Acharya insisted that He had made a very simple arrangement for the Lord’s stay and Prasad, yet in reality He had prepared for a grand feast. All the various food items were cooked by His wife. Srila Krishnadasa Kaviraja concedes in Caitanya Caritamrta that it was not possible for him to describe the innumerable food items that were served on that day. After offering them to the deities, Sri Advaita prabhu seated the two brothers (Gaura Nitai) and made them honor these nectarian preparations. We are describing a few of them below for the pleasure of the devotees. Fine rice, yellow clarified butter, mung Dal (lentils), potol (Trichosanthes dioica), squash, man kachu (Giant taro), salad made of ginger and spinach, five types of shukto (a Bengali delicacy made of mixed vegetables), eggplant , phulabadi (a kind of dal preparation), a preparation made of coconut pulp mixed with curd and rock candy, banana flower curry, various kinds of sweetmeats and yogurt, sweet rice mixed with ghee, chipped rice mixed with bananas, etc were only a few of these uncountable items. There were hundreds of pots filled with various kinds of preparations.Lord Caitanya was very pleased seeing the arrangement and remarked that He would treasure upon His head ,life after life, the lotus feet of one who could offer such various delicacies unto Sri Krishna.aiche anna ye krishna-ke karaya bhojana
janme janme shire dhharon tanhara carana
(Caitanya Caritamrta, Madhya,3.65)But when Lord Caitanya was asked to honor this huge quantity of Prasadam, He was very reluctant. He argued that such varieties of food was not good for a sannyasi who needed to control His senses.Advaita Thakura then requested the Lord to give up His word jugglery and accept the prasadam. He cited that those foodstuffs were not even a tiny morsel before Him. Citing the example of Jagannatha Puri, Sri Advaita remarked how Lord Caitanya in His form as lord Jagannatha accepted food, fifty-four times a day.Thereafter, Advaita Acharya engaged in some jovial friendly conversations with Nityananda prabhu. Lord Nitai joked that after having fasted for three days, He had hoped to break His fast at the house of Advaita Acharya. But seeing the arrangements in front of Him, He had become very disappointed as the quantity of food would not even fill half of His belly.Advaita Acharya reminded Lord Nitai that He was a travelling mendicant surviving on roots and fruits. He joked that Nityananda Prabhu should not become overly greedy and instead gladly accept whatever food was offered to Him. In this way the two Lords tried to pull each other’s leg, and passed their time having a lot of fun. It is worthwhile mentioning here that Sri Advaita Acharya and Nityananda Prabhu had the utmost respect for each other and their friendly conversation should not be misinterpreted for an argument. After the two Lords have had their prasad, Sri Advaita accepted His lunch along with Mukunda and Haridasa and fed them as much as they desired. As the people came to know that lord Caitanya had come to Santipur, they started gathering at the residence of Advaita Acharya with the hope of seeing the Lord’s lotus feet. They became very pleased to receive darsana of the Lord. In the evening , the house of Advaita, was flooded with ecstatic dancing sankirtana in which Sri Caitanya and all His associates participated. In the morning, Chandrasekhara acharya brought mother Saci to Santipur.Seeing Her son again, she became overwhelmed. Seeing her son Viswambhara without His beautiful hairs, however, she became greatly agitated. Lord Caitanya immediately offered His prostrated obeisances unto His mother. Out of love she began to caress His body and kiss His face. She tried to observe Him carefully but could not do so as her eyes were filled with tears.Thereafter the devotees of Navadvipa met the Lord who was very happy to see them again.Srivasa Pandita and his family, Gadadhara, Gangadasa, Murari, Suklambara, Buddhimanta Khan, Nandana, Sridhara, Damodara,Mukunda, sanjaya, etc as if all regained their lives, seeing their beloved Lord again. Thereafter, Saci mata took up the responsibility of cooking for the Lord. The devotees passed their days singing and dancing in ecstasy. One day mother Saci requested the Lord to make Jagannatha Puri, instead of Vrindavana, His headquarters. She argued that Puri was quite near to Navadvipa and people often travelled to and fro between those two cities. Hence it would be easier for mother Saci to get the news of His son more frequently if He stayed at Puri. The devotees agreed and made the Lord aware of Saci devi’s request. The Lord became greatly pleased to hear the proposal and accepted it. After staying for a few more days at Santipur, the Lord requested for His leave. He assured the devotees that they shall soon meet again. He explained that sometimes they can all go and meet Him in Puri, while at other times, He would Himself come to Bengal, in order to bathe in the holy Ganges.Saying thus, the Lord circumambulated His mother and started for Jagannatha Puri. As soon as the Lord left, a great tumultuous cry filled the land ,air and sky of Santipur.

Srinivasa Acharya meets Advaita Thakura at Santipur :
Sri Srinivasa Acharya, the empowered incarnation of the Lord’s ecstasy, had also once advented to this holy land of Santipur, seeking the mercy of the senior vaishnavas and to take shelter of this transcendental abode. ‘Prema Vilasa’ describes his visit in detail. By this time, Sri Advaita Prabhu had already disappeared from this world .Srinivasa was confused as to where to go in Santipur. While wandering, Srinivasa suddenly saw a tall personality, whose body was lit with effulgence, standing right before him. The hands of this person extended upto His knees. Realizing that this person was none other than Sri Advaita Acharya (who had appeared to bless Srinivasa), he began to shiver and offered Him his respectful obeisances. Sri Advaita embraced Srinivasa and blessed him wholeheartedly, revealing that Srinivasa was destined to widely preach the glories of the Lord. He disclosed that in the near future , Sri Srinivasa would inundate the entire country with Lord Caitanya’s love and compassion. The acharya revealed that Srinivasa was destined to accept initiation from Gopala Bhatta Goswami. He also revealed that the books that were being compiled by Sri Rupa and Sanatana Goswamis in Vrindavana would be widely propagated by Srinivasa.Sri Advaita instructed him to travel next to Khardaha, where he could take darsana of Jahnava mata, following which he could proceed towards Vrindavana. Saying this Sri Advaita disappeared from his sight. Thereafter , Srimati Sita Thakurani, the wife of Sri Advaita prabhu, arrived at that place and invited Srinivasa to accept Prasadam at her home. Prem Vilasa states that the Prasadam ,Sita Mata cooked, tasted just like nectar and anyone who honored such Prasad would immediately be immersed in ecstasy. The details of Srinivasa Acharya’s journey is covered in a separate article entitled – ‘Sri Srinivasa Acharya’s Sripat, Jajigram (Near Srikhanda, Katwa)’.

On an ending note :
Sri Advaita Thakura manifested His transcendental pastimes for about 125 years and disappeared from this world around the year 1559 AD. Before the advent of Lord Caitanya, Sri Advaita had travelled to Gaya for performing the pinda Daan ceremony (last rites) of His father. He continued on His pilgrimage and subsequently reached Vrindavana. At Vrindavana He rediscovered the ancient deity of Sri Madana Mohana, which was originally established by Krishna’s great grandson Vajranabha and then was lost in due course of time. Sri Advaita re-established the worship of Madana Mohana jiu in Vrindavana, entrusting the deity service unto the hands of the priest, Sri Purusottama Chaube.During the Mahaprakash Lila (Mahaprabhu’s ecstasy that lasted for 21 hours) at Srivasa Angana, Lord Caitanya refused to bestow His mercy upon Saci devi, though He readily showered His mercy upon all others. It was because, Saci mata had previously offended Sri Advaita Acharya, by insulting Him. When Mahaprabhu’s elder brother Visvarupa had left His home, taking up sannyasa, Saci Mata held Advaita Prabhu responsible ,as Visvarupa regularly attended His Bhagavata classes. Later when she saw that Nimai was also closely associating with Advaita Prabhu, leaving His wife Lakshmipriya at home, she became very concerned. Out of anxiety she then remarked that the name ‘Advaita’ didn’t suit the thakura as He was expert in splitting people and families.Instead the name ‘Dvaita’ befitted Him. At Srivasa Angan, Srimati Saci devi hence begged forgiveness from Advaita Acharya, before she was allowed to behold the lord’s divine form and receive His mercy. Through this pastime, the Lord demonstrated that even His mother Saci devi, is not automatically excused for the offenses she had committed against the vaishnavas. And as mother Saci taught us, that if one does commit an offense at the lotus feet of a vaishnava then, one should atone for it by begging forgiveness at the feet of the same devotee he has offended. This pastime also reveals to us how dearly Lord Caitanya loves Sri Advaita gosai.Without the mercy of Advaita Thakura, however, one cannot achieve the lotus feet of Sri Gaura Nitai. Narottama Das Thakura hence sings :doya koro sita-pati advaita gosai tava krpa-bale pai caitanya nitai(song – Sri Krishna Caitanya Prabhu Doya Koro More)We worship the lotus feet of our spiritual master ,whose causeless mercy has empowered us ineligible fools ,to gain entrance and take up service in this transcendental abode of Santipur. We seek shelter of this holy land, and pray that its glories remain forever imprinted in our heart.‘The Gaudiya Treasures of Bengal’ offers millions of obeisances and humbly prays to Sri Advaita Acharya that we advance in our Krishna consciousness, develop attachment unto the lotus feet of Lord Gauranga and are able to serve Sri Guru & Vaishnavas, by our honest and sincere efforts. We seek His blessings and compassion , in successfully rendering this humble service of reciting the pastimes and revealing the pastime places of the Supreme Lord and His beloved associates. We shall consider ourselves greatly fortunate and our existence meaningful if Lord Gaurahari and our dear spiritual master are kindly pleased with our endeavors.

Yatra 2018 - Day 12 - Surabhi-Kunj Śrī Godruma-dwipa

Today our yatra visited Surabhi Kunj at Sri Godruma-Dwipa.

Videos:

  1. Krishna Katha at Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura Samadhi - Surabhi-Kunj Śrī Godruma-dwipa
  2. Evening Katha
Katha from today:

Prayers by Bhakti Vinod Thakur:

So Bhakti Vinod Thakur was thinking, in this totally materialistic condition of life what can I do. He did his best. In the mood of Sri Advaita Acharya he began to pray. He prayed for a ray of Vishnu to appear in this world, to establish the true teachings of Sri Gauranga mahaprabhu. Because you see Advaita Acharya understood that it was the time for Krishna to appear himself so he called for Krishna directly. But Bhakti Vinod Thakur did not want to interfere with Krishna’s schedule as he gives in shastras. He did not ask for Krishna to appear.  “Krishna, I know you do not appear again in this age of kali Yuga until the Kalki avatar, so I will not ask that of you”. But he asked for someone as good as Krishna himself, His empowered representative, His empowered devotee, the ray of Vishnu, to come to give light to this world of darkness. So he prayed and he prayed and of course Krishna cannot refuse the sweet and pure prayer of his surrendered devotee, especially when that prayer is in the mood of preaching in the compassionate spirit of bhakti Vinod Thakur.

Discovery of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s birth place:
There were so many great babajis, who were maintaining highest standards. But they were basically keeping to themselves and they were not coming out and fighting against and reliving that discrepancy in name of teaching of Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu. So later, it is described that one time his father was to give a lecture on what is Brahmin and what is a Vaishnava but he was feeling ill. Thakur Vimal Prasad, he went to give this lecture instead and because it was filled with cast Brahmins, what he did was first began to glorify the cast of Brahmins and the qualities of Brahmins, attributes of Brahmins, importance of following and surrendering to Brahmins. So all the Brahmins their hearts were melting like anything, they were thinking ahh he is great scholar, we have never heard any one glorifying our cast like him. So they really their hearts, their minds, their ears everything was surrendering to the beautiful discourse of Srila Bhakti Siddhanta. So pleasing to them and every one and he turned whole thing around and explained that Brahmin is not by birth; yes we have exalted the prominence and importance of Brahmins but even if a person is born in a family of dog eaters he is better than Brahmin if he is chanting the holy name and you can initiate any one in a Brahmin order whatever their birth is if they simply have quality of a vaishnava. So in this way they became very much defeated. And people were coming and standing in line to touch his lotus feet. He also wrote his commentary on Surya. Siddhant and he was great astrologer as well and for this he was awarded the name Saraswati, Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati on another occasion, his father was very much anxious to shift to Navadvipa Dham to live there. So Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur moved to Navadvipa Dham and along with his father Bhakti Vinod Thakur moved to a place called Godrum Dvipa, which is near Surabhi kunj and there Bhakti Vinod Thakur was giving discourses each day. Shortly after arriving at Godrum Dvipa, Srila Bhakti Vinod Thakur discovered the actual birth place of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Surabhi Kunja
The place where Surabhi and Indra were performing Gaura Bhajana is known as Surabhi Kunja. Presently there is a Gaudiya Matha temple at Surabhi Kunja and the deities are worshiped in a small house. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura stayed at this place for a few years. This temple is located on the bank of the Jalangi River.

The Headquarters of Nityananda Prabhu
Bhaktivinoda Thakura lived here for many years before moving into his house further down the road at Sivananda Sukhada Kunja. It is interesting to note that this place is where Lord Nityananda established the headquarters for his Nama Hatta preaching in Bengal here. Then, four hundred years after Nityananda Prabhu, Thakura Bhaktivinoda, who took initiation in the line of Jahnava Devi. Lord Nityananda's eternal consort led a revival of Nama Hatta preaching throughout Bengal and other parts of India from this same area.

This place is non-different from Surabhivana in Vrindavana. It fulfills the desires of devotees and one who builds a cottage and worships here, will easily become absorbed in Caitanya Mahaprabhu's lotus feet.

Presiding Deities: Sri Sri Radha Krishna is being worshiped here.

Points of Interest:
1. Banyan tree: Mother Surabhi performed austerities and lived under a huge banyan tree here. This tree is now unmanifest but a Tulasi plant (growing on the left side of the courtyard) identifies the area where it used to be.

2. Cow: There is also a very nice friendly cow in the courtyard which is not surprising for the place of Mother Surabhi, who is a desire cow from the heavenly planets.

Katha from today:

Nabadwip

In Bengali, Nabadwip means 'a collection of nine islands'. Just as its name suggests, Nabadwip is a collection of islands, namely Antardwip (Sri Mayapur), Simantadwip, Rudradwip, Madhyadwip, Godrumdwip, Ritudwip, Jahnudwip, Modadrumdwip, and Koladwip. Situated in the Nadia district of West Bengal, the place is considered to be much sanctified, since it is the birth place of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Nabadwip is visited by thousands of pilgrims belonging to Gaudiya Vaishnavism every year, on the occasion of Sri Navadvipa-mandala Parikrama.

Navadwip was earlier located on the eastern bank of Bhagirathi, along with the rest of the Nadia district. However, as Bhagirathi River changed its course, the city shifted to its western bank. Blessed with numerous old and new temples, the city welcomes people of various sects, like Shaktas, Vaishnavs and Shivaites, with open arms. The month of Agharayan i.e. November (according to Gregorian Calendar) is the best time to visit this place, as during this period, the city gets on into extremely festive and celebration mood with the arrival of the Rash Festival.

Sri Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaj

Jagannath Das meets Bhaktivinoda Thakur

Jagannath Das Babaji met Bhaktivinoda Thakur for the first time in 1880 AD. Their second meeting took place in the village of Amalajoria in Burdwan district in 1891. On this occasion, they spent the entire night (it was Ekadasi) discussing Krishna-katha. Jagannath Das Baba encouraged Bhaktivinoda Thakur to preach Gaura’s name and abode.

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur gave an account of this eventful night in his Sajjana-toshani magazine as follows: “After spending the whole night in the Ekadasi vigil, at eight in the morning, people from the entire village gathered together to go on the nagara-sankirtan through its streets. Placing the venerable Jagannath Das Babaji Maharajji at the head of the group, they made their way to the Prapannashrama. It is impossible to describe Babaji Maharaj’s ecstatic transformations during this kirtan. Though he is over a hundred years old, he dances like a lion, sometimes singing out the couplet,

nitai ki nama eneche re

‘What a divine name Nitai has brought! He has brought the name to the marketplace of the Name and is selling it for the price of faith!’

“As he sang, he cried and fell to the ground in ecstasy. I then saw something transpire which I had never seen before. All those who were present were affected by his mood: their eyes filled with tears and their hairs stood on end, and even though they could barely sing, they remained absorbed in the kirtan and danced wildly.”

In his autobiography, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur has also written: “In 1892, Jagannath Das Babaji and many other Vaishnavas participated in the sankirtan festival in Godruma and then in Sri Mayapur. In the month of Magh in 1299 (Bengali), Babaji Maharaj came from Kuliya-Nabadwip with his associates to Bhaktivinoda Thakur’s residence, Surabhikuïja, in Godrumadvipa. A great sankirtan festival was held there on Wednesday, the 27th of Magh.”

Babaji Maharaj designates Mahaprabhu’s birth site

A physically powerful Vrajavasi named Vihari Das Babaji was Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaj’s personal servant. He used to place Babaji Maharaj in a large wicker basket and carry him from place to place. Even though Babaji Maharaj was very aged, his sight was still good. His eyelids drooped, however, covering his eyes, and he had to lift them in order to see. It is said that Vihari Dasji carried Babaji Maharaj in the wicker basket as far as the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Upon arrival, Babaji Maharaj got out of the basket and began to dance madly, singing the names Jaya Sachinandana Gaura-Hari. Everyone was amazed to see the old babaji dance in this way. Through his divine vision, Babaji Maharaj pointed out the site of Mahaprabhu’s birth and then later the site of the breaking of the mridanga by the Qazi. This place is now known as Khola-bhangara Òanga and is, of course, the same as Srivasa Angan..

In Sajjana-toshani, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur has described this event as follows: “At eleven o’clock in the morning on Thursday, the 20th of Phalguna in 1299 Bangabda (1892 AD), devotees filled three boats on the west bank of the Ganges in Nabadwip town. The great devotee Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaj was carried in a palanquin. By the time the party reached Mayapur it was impossible to count the number of people who had gathered. Dvarika Babu and a party of devotees carrying colorful flags was waiting for the renounced Vaishnavas with a joyous kirtan at Mahaprabhu’s Janma-sthana. When all these devotees had gathered in the raised area where Mahaprabhu was born and started to dance, it was such a wondrous sight as had likely not been seen in Nabadwip-dham in four hundred years. Later the devotees sat down and after discussing the matter, decided that deity service should be established both at the birthplace and at Srivasa Angan. Jagannath Das Babaji Mahashaya proposed that Jagannath and Sachi Devi should be worshiped in one building and Mahaprabhu with Lakshmi Devi and Vishnupriya standing on his either side in another. On the other hand, deities of the Pancha Tattva should be consecrated in Srivasa Angan.”

In those days, there was a large kadamba tree at the Janmasthana in Mayapur. Babaji Maharaj came and danced under this tree. Sri Gaura Kishora Das Babaji used to sit under that tree chanting the Holy Name in deep trance. Jagannath Das Babaji had stayed a long time in a place named Bhajana-kutira in Koladvipa. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur had a concrete veranda built for this cottage. Babaji Maharaj’s samadhi tomb is situated there. Babaji Maharaj used to visit Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur in his house, Bhakti Bhavana, in Ram Bag in Calcutta. There he met Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur upon whom he showered unlimited affection. When he learned that Saraswati Thakur had achieved incomparable expertise in astrology, he asked him to make an almanac based on the Vaishnava calendar. Later, the Chaitanya Math began publishing the Nabadwip-Païjika in accordance with Babaji Maharaj’s wishes.

Babaji Maharaj’s disappearance

When approaching the end of his sojourn in this world, Babaji Maharaj became hunched and tiny looking. Nevertheless, when he danced in kirtan, he would look six feet tall, a magnificent specimen of humanity, with long arms reaching down to his knees. He would sometimes jump five or six feet into the air when absorbed in the ecstatic mood of kirtan.

Jagannath Das’s disappearance took place on the Shukla-pratipad of the month of Phalguna, Monday, February 25, 1895. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur wrote the following about this in Sajjana-toshani (22,2): “At ten o’clock in the morning, in the Bhajana-kutira in Koladvipa in Nabadwip town, the old general of the Vaishnavas went to his eternal abode. The Siddha Babaji went to the spiritual world, but left this world in darkness. We will no longer be able to see his ecstatic dancing in kirtan with these mundane eyes. May he bestow his blessings on us from his place in the eternal home.”

Rasavihari Goswami of Puruniya in Burdwan district was Jagannath Das’s initiated disciple. Rasavihari Goswami initiated the independent King of Tripura, Raja Ishanacandra Manikya Bahadura. Rasavihari Goswami’s deity, Rasaviharijiu, is worshiped to this day in the Raja’s palace.

Dhamesvara Temple (Mahaprabhu Bari)

The deity of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu in this temple is said to have been worshiped by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s wife, Srimati Vishnupriya, after the Lord took sannyasa. This deity of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu has His arms extended out lovingly towards His devotees. Vishnupriya was sixteen years old when Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu took sannyasa and she disappeared from this material world at the age of ninety-six, so she worshiped this deity for eighty years. Wooden shoes are kept in this temple which are said to have been worn by Lord Caitanya. After Vishnupriya-devi’s disappearance her cousin took the deity to his house. At that time he was living on the eastern side of the Ganga. Later on when his house was washed away by the Ganga he moved to Kuliya-grama on the western side of the Ganga. This Kuliya-grama is known today as the town of Navadvipa. As Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu was the son-in-law of this family, they still to this day worship the deity as their son-in-law.

Yatra 2018 - Day 10 - Jagannatha Temple at Rajapur

Today we had wonderful darshan of Jagannatha Swami along with Baladeva and Lady Subhadra at Rajapur. There are some beautiful pastimes at this place:

Five hundred years ago, at the time of Lord Chaitanya, there lived a very wonderful devotee named Jagadish Ganguli. His residence was in a small village near Mayapur. Although he was advanced in age, every year he would go on the 900 kilometer journey to Jagannath Puri on foot to associate with his master Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, take darshan of his beloved Jagannatha, Baladeva and Subhadra Devi, and participate in the all-auspicious Ratha-yatra festival.

One day, less than a month before his scheduled departure for Puri, Jagadish’s plans were foiled. He was stricken with a terrible disease that left him completely blind. Because he was optimistic by nature, this did not dampen his desire to make the yearly padayatra to Puri. He would no longer be able to see the divine, all-merciful forms of Lord Chaitanya and Lord Jagannatha, that was for sure. But still he could relish the sound of sweet kirtana and discourses given by exalted Vaishnavas.

His friends and associates, however, were not so keen on him traveling. They considered the annual pilgrimage too long and dangerous for a blind man and refused to take him with them. Jagadish was heartbroken. His existence in this world became a cause for his constant lamentation and despondency. Somehow he passed his days, calling out for the all-merciful Jagannatha to be merciful to him.

Then, one night, Lord Jagannatha appeared to his devotee in a dream. The Lord told him that on the following day when he went for his daily bath in the Ganges, a log would touch his head and restore his vision. The Lord instructed Jagadish to take that log to a nearby village and request a certain devotee carpenter there to carve a Deity of Lord Jagannatha. The Lord also explained that at first the carpenter would refuse to do the work because he was a leper and his hands were very deformed. It was Jagadisha’s task to convince him to do the service. The Lord assured him that when the carpenter had completed the Deity his leprosy would be cured.

At the break of dawn Jagadish woke from his dream and marveled at it. Eagerly he readied himself for his daily bath. He paid his obeisances to Mother Ganga and then entered her sacred waters. Lord Jagannatha’s words were quickly proven true. A log touched his head and promptly restored his vision. Enlivened by the Lord’s shower of mercy, he took the log and quickly proceeded towards the nearby village. After many hours, an exhausted Jagadish found the leper carpenter, who flatly refused to carve the Deity.

He showed his deformed fingers and asked his expectant customer, “How is it possible for me to carve the divine form of the Lord with these hands?” An intense exchange followed, each devotee speaking his mind. Finally the leper agreed to carve Lord Jagannatha.

Jagadish lived with the devotee leper carpenter while he was carving his Lord. He saw him suffering terribly. Blood and pus oozed from the stumps that were once his fingers and his face was distorted by pain. He wanted to stop this torturous work. Somehow or other Jagadish managed to convince him to continue and constantly spoke to him the pastimes of his beloved Lord Jagannatha to distract his mind from the pain. Finally the Deity was completed and to his amazement, the devotee leper was cured of his leprosy.

In great pomp and celebration, Lord Jagannatha was carried to the site of the present temple and His worship was established there.

A few nights later Jagadish had another dream. This time Lord Jagannatha instructed him to take some nearby neem wood and request the same carpenter to make the deities of Lady Subhadra and Lord Baladeva. The devotee carpenter was delighted to offer his service and very soon Their Lordships were installed with great love and attention by their trusted devotee.

But then, one day Jagadish left this mortal world. His beloved deities were neglected. Indeed, Lord Jagannatha, Subhadra Devi and Lord Balarama were completely forgotten and over time their Temple deteriorated and collapsed around Them.

Some centuries later, a local villager noticed a unique, beautiful blue flower growing on top of a termite hill. Curious, he ventured closer and was amazed to hear a voice calling, “Please, please give Me some water”. Quickly he began digging, eager to search out the owner of the voice that instructed and intrigued him. To his utter surprise he unearthed the beautiful transcendental trio: Lord Jagannatha, Lady Subhadra and Lord Baladeva! He was further astonished to see that although the deities had been residing in the middle of a termite hill, Their wood was miraculously unharmed. This event happened about sixty years ago. Once again a temple was constructed and elaborate worship established.

In 1978 the aging pujari of their lordships, his health failing, began to worry. He was fearful that history would repeat itself, and could not bear the thought of his beloved Lords being neglected and inconvenienced again. He decided to offer their property to ISKCON. On the Gaura-purnima day of 1978 the most auspicious transaction took place and a beautiful new temple has since been constructed for Their Lordships’ pleasure.

The holy dhama of Sri Kshetra or Jagannatha Puri is eternally manifest in this holy place and that all the benefits one can attain by visiting Jagannatha Puri may be achieved visiting the Jagannatha Mandir at Simantadvipa in Sri Navadvipa-mandala. One of these many benefits is the opportunity to partake of Lord Jagannatha’s famous maha-prasadam. Lord Jagannatha’s mercy—in its most delicious form—is waiting for your visit and surely you will be blessed once you visit their lordships.

Pastimes of Lord Jagannatha in Rajapur (Simantadwipa)
For reasons mysterious to most, the Lord appears and disappears according to His own sweet will. Indeed He himself states that one who understands the mystery of His appearance and activities does not take birth again in the material world. Legend has it that after the demise of Jagadish Ganguli, the Lord being dissatisfied with the standards of His worship, which was almost totally neglected, decided to close His manifest pastimes. Appearing through a dream He said a typhoid epidemic was imminent and that everyone should leave the village, which they did, save for the temple priest and his family, who all became infected and died. For long time the temple was forgotten until about 60 years ago, when the Lord who once again desired to be worshiped called for Jaimini Ghosh.

Jaimini Ghosh was only 15 years old at that time and he recalled:

One evening I was passing along the nearby road on my way to Nabadwip [town] when a bamboo tree crashed across the path. Feeling an uncanny presence, I suspected it the work of some ghosts and I knew that if I stepped over the tree, something would happen to me. Gripped by fear I crouched to the ground and in that terrified condition I lost consciousness.

He awoke to an assuring voice saying, “It’s alright. Now you may proceed. There is no more danger.” Opening his eyes he found himself to be just outside the temple.

Jaimini asked, “Why did You did that to me?”

“I didn’t,” replied the unembodied voice, “I saved you. I am your friend.”

Suspiciously Jaimini replied, “If You saved me, if You are really my friend and want to help me, then help me get to my uncle’s house at Nabadwip [town].”

As if he was being carried, young Jaimini effortlessly sped down the jungle path, then along the main road, then across Ganga (without a boat) and arrived safely at his uncle’s house.

Shortly after that, the same voice spoke to him, revealing Himself to be Lord Jagannatha and told Jaimini to begin his worship by offering milk, Ganga water and fruit. With the permission of Phatik Chandra Chatterjee, the owner of the temple, Jaimini began to worship Them. He recalled:

The Deities were almost half-buried by an anthil, but day by day as I worshipped Them, They gradually rose up and became more and more visible.

Jaimini begged money from the local villagers, repaired the temple and built a boundary fence but after that no one was willing to give him any more. So he appealed to Lord Jagannatha and explained his plight. That night two huge branches of a nearby tree fell. He sold that wood and the money provided for the seva for a few months.

When it was all finished, he again approached Lord Jagannatha and said, “Oh Lord, I cannot maintain You anymore. You will have to maintain Yourself.”

From that day onwards, he would find just enough money to pay for the day’s puja inside the temple, beside the altar.

One day, Jaimini fell asleep outside the temple and when he awoke, to his surprise, he found himself at Jagannatha Puri. This was during the Ratha-yatra festival and so he enjoyed the festival for some days.

Then, he became anxious for his parents who would be terribly worried about him, not knowing knowing his whereabouts. He decided to return but he didn’t have any money for his fare. He approached some pandas at Jagannatha Puri and explained his situation. “If Lord Jagannatha brought you here, then go before Him and ask Him to take you back.” So he did that and the next morning he woke up to find himself back at Rajapur, Simantadvipa. (Jaimini Ghosh left this world a few years ago.)

Some brahmanas from a local village felt that they could offer Lord Jagannatha a better standard of worship and they wanted to worship Him in their village. Therefore one day they came and stole Lord Jagannatha.

While carrying the Lord across the fields they all suddenly felt the need to answer nature’s call, so they put Lord Jagannatha down and went to pass water. But upon returning they found that they could not lift Lord Jagannatha anymore, so they went and brought some more men to help them but try as they may, they just could not budge the Lord. Then they realized that He didn’t want to leave His village Rajapur at Simantadvipa, so they came back and sorrowfully told the priests, “Your Deity is out in the field and wants to come back”. Two of our pujaris came, picked Him up and carried Him back home.

Yatra 2018 - Day 8 - Yogapitha, Srivasa Angan, BSST Samadhi, Gandharvika-Giridhari Temple

Today was our second day of our parikrama at Sridham Mayapur. After mangal aarti, we listened to Srimad Bhagavatam class after which we went to visited - Yogapitha, Srivasa Angan, BSST Samadhi, Gandharvika-Giridhari Temple.

Sridhama Mayapur is situated 130km from Kolkata, West Bengal and is famous as the birth-place of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu who appeared in the year 1482. His performed His pastimes of boyhood and youth here until He took the renounced order of sannyasa when He was 24 years old.

His birthplace, known as the Yogapitha, is on the banks of the holy Ganga and was discovered in 1887 by the 19th Century Vaisnava saint, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura. The Thakura built a beautiful temple here with the Deities of Mahaprabhu and His consorts Visnupriya and Laksmipriya, and Radha-Madhava.

There is also a neem tree in the courtyard that is the exact spot where Lord Caitanya was born. There are also Deities of Mahaprabhu as a child along with His parents, Saci-devi and Jagannatha Misra.

While digging the foundation for this temple a deity of Adhoksaja Visnu was unearthed which is believed to have been the household Deity of Jagannatha Misra. The Yogapitha temple also houses the Deities of Sri Sri Laksmi-Nrsimha and Sri Sri Gaura-Gadadhara.

Down the road from Yogapitha is Sri Caitanya Matha, the original headquarters of the Gaudiya Matha founded by Sri Srimad Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada.

Srila Sarasvati Thakura’s samadhi is situated here as well as the Samadhi-mandira of Srila Gaura-kisora Dasa Babaji Maharaja, the guru of Srila Sarasvati Thakura.

Srivas Angan

Deities of Radha Krishna, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Prabhu Nityananda can be seen here. Sri Caitanya and his associates used to have kirtan here all night long. This is also where Chand Kazi and his men broke the mridanga. Thus it is also called Khol Bhanga Danga, the place where the mrdanga was broken. This is the courtyard of Sri Srivasa Thakura and it is just 250 meters away from the Yogapitha. The temple has three shrines: Sri Sri Radha Krishna and Lord Chaitanya.
Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu during His maha-prakasa-lila when He revealed Himself to His intimate devotees as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Sri Sri Gaura-Nitai. Lord Nityananda and Lord Chaitanya are leading all the devotees in the Kirtana that went to Chand Kazi’s palace to protest against his ban on the Harinama-sankirtana. Since this is the place where a mridanga was broken by Chand Kazi’s men to stop the sankirtana, it is also known as Khol-bhanga danga.
